No matter how you feel about your carpet, there is no better feeling than knowing it is nice and clean. It feels better, and it really does make it look better. So no matter what you do, give it a good wash.
There is nothing wrong with putting area rugs over carpet. If you are going to use a rug at all, make it a big one. I know these can be expensive but this is the best way to give your place character, and to hide that eye sore underneath. Places like World Market, Flor, and IKEA are great for finding large and inexpensive area rugs.
Try to do everything in your power to make your walls and ceiling something worthy of looking at. Paint your ceiling some great color, or add a great light fixture to really draw them in. Since you don’t love your floors, love your walls. Find a really cool renters wallpaper that is so incredible, they will never even notice the rosy mess you have going on below.
No matter what color your carpet it, if it’s so outrageous that feel the need to hide it, I say embrace it. In this case your carpet is pink, maybe you can just bring this color in with pillows, throws, and accessories. I mean if you can’t beat em, join em.
